I am currently working in the Life Skills classroom at an elementary school. I have been working with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for 2 years now. I am trained in the use of assistive technology communication devices, some American Sign Language, and PECS (picture exchange communication system). I use few words with ASD students as it can be difficult for them to process spoken language. I know how to focus their attention using both signals and timers to limit work times and break times. I believe in using frequent breaks to allow processing time and repetition of lessons to progressively achieve small steps toward goals.
